Summer Fun!

The end of the school year is always a busy and exciting time at HELP, as we showcase academic accomplishments, honor our newest graduates, and say goodbye to staff and students for the summer. To mark the end of ESL classes this year, students in English Three adapted classic Haitian folktales into plays and gave a night of entertaining performances.

Above, students act out a story called “The Cat and the Dog,” in which God sends the animals on a race to settle their argument over whether humans should come back to life after death. Beverly Pierre (accounting, '15) played Cat, Kervin-Desland Templier (accounting, '16) played Dog, and Fery Brunis (pharmacy, '16) played God.

On June 29, a formal graduation ceremony was held at the HELP Center. We were honored to welcome Mimerose Beaubrun, of the internationally acclaimed Haitian roots band, Boukman Eksperyans, as our guest speaker. Mimerose spoke about how HELP’s pillars of respect, rigor, courage, sacrifice, and service should be lifelong commitments and stressed that Haiti was counting on these fortunate graduates to be leaders for change. Then Mimerose was joined by her husband and fellow Boukman singer, Lolo, and singers Sem Saint-Jacques and Josue Emile in performing a few songs.IMG_3616This was a fitting tribute to our graduates who have worked hard to become part of the 0.5% of Haitians to earn a university degree. We are proud to present the members of the Class of 2013:

Another developing tradition at HELP is our annual end-of-the-year barbeque celebrating the end of HELP classes and wishing a fond farewell to staff that are leaving us. Although universities will hold exams into July, and although sun alternated with rain all afternoon, staff and students were in a festive mood, enjoying great food, music, dancing, and games, in honor of a another successful year at HELP.
