Haiti’s Challenge

With more than 84% of university-educated Haitians living abroad, Haiti has the highest rate of “brain drain” in the world, resulting in a lack of skilled labor, educated leadership, and management capacity. Haiti’s 1% university enrollment rate means that most of Haiti’s potential professionals are denied the opportunity to gain the advanced skills and education necessary to contribute to social and economic progress in their country.

HELP’s Response

HELP directly addresses these issues by providing comprehensive university scholarships for high-performing, economically disadvantaged secondary school graduates in Haiti. Having grown from a single student in 1996 to more than 200 students today, HELP is the largest university scholarship program in Haiti.

HELP Scholarships Include

  • Classes: Enrollment at an internationally accredited university in Haiti.

  • Supplies: Textbooks, school supplies, and living stipends.

  • Housing: Space in one of four HELP dormitories where students manage all household responsibilities.

  • Advising and counseling: Each student is assigned to a HELP advisor, who they meet at least once a month to track their academic, social, and personal progress.

  • Thesis support: the undergraduate thesis is a graduation requirement for most degree programs in Haiti. HELP’s thesis advising team guides students from topic development, through research and writing, to edits and mock defense.

  • Citizenship & Leadership curriculum: This four-year program uses HELP’s five pillars of respect, rigor, courage, sacrifice and service, as the foundation for teaching civics, citizenship, and leadership. The curriculum encourages initiative and community engagement through student-led service projects.

  •  English curriculum: HELP’s goal is for each student to be proficient by graduation. The mandatory four-year curriculum teaches grammar, speaking, and writing, with an introduction to literature.

  • IT curriculum: A two-year program covers introductory and intermediate computer literacy.

  • Career services: Career and internships connections for HELP students and alumni with employers in Haiti. All HELP students participate in workshops on CV preparation, job search strategies, and interview skills, and are eligible for internships at HELP and local institutions.
