Youveline Alce

Youveline’s Godmother instilled within her the values of hard work and dedication, which led her to maintain a merit scholarship from the age of eight through high school, and into college with HELP where now she is supported by the contributions of HELP Alumni!

Dynamic and engaged, Youveline is in her third year studying industrial engineering.  And she is again relying on those values as the situation in Haiti “really turn[s] everything upside down.”

She explains “HELP has done its best to help us overcome the stress with encouragement and support from advisors and the administration.  We even had organized therapy sessions with a psychologist.  I really appreciate the efforts made for us to get through in spite of the situation.”

Despite the challenges Youveline continues to put in the hard work her degree requires, while also staying engaged with her HELP coursework. “I put in a lot of effort, though, and did my best; I learned so many interesting things that I sometimes think I am already an industrial engineer!” Youveline said.  “At HELP I’m involved in my classes and they’re going quite well.  Leadership is my favorite; the structure of the course gives me lots of motivation and I participate a lot.  I appreciate our class discussions and the homework helps us learn the concepts easily.  In English, I really like when the students get to lead the class.”

Outside of the classroom Youveline explained that she is also involved in HELP’s women’s empowerment group, and is on the Health and Safety Commission for her dorm. “These activities are showing me I have more potential than I thought! HELP has contributed to my motivation and achievement. I have developed a lot of self-confidence that allows me to leave my comfort zone, and, on an academic level, I have come to think more deeply about things.”

Through her academic and extracurricular efforts, Youveline is excelling in ways she never expected. And with help from our alumni contribution program, as well as our donors and supporters, she is on track for a bright future.

“I would like to thank HELP and my KOREM sponsors; I am very grateful for everything.  You have contributed to the person I am today; your efforts will not be in vain,” said Youveline.
